How to Stop Your Cockatoo From Screaming for Attention

1. Provide plenty of attention when they are NOT screaming. Cockatoos are social animals and crave interaction with their human family. Play with them, talk to them, and spend time with them daily. The more attention they get when they are calm and quiet, the less likely they will scream to get your attention.

2. Ignore attention-seeking screams. If your cockatoo starts screaming for attention, the worst thing you can do is give it to them. This will only reinforce their behavior and teach them that screaming is the best way to get what they want. Instead, ignore them completely. Do not make eye contact, talk to them, or even react in any way. This may take some time, but eventually, your cockatoo will learn that screaming is not an effective way to get your attention.

3. Provide alternative forms of stimulation. Cockatoos are intelligent birds that need a lot of mental stimulation. Try giving them puzzles, toys, and other interactive items to keep their minds active. You can also take them on short outings around your home or neighborhood. These activities will give your cockatoo something else to focus on besides screaming.

4. Make sure your cockatoo's environment is comfortable and safe. Cockatoos can become stressed and anxious when they are uncomfortable. Ensure that their cage or enclosure is large enough, is in a quiet area, and has plenty of perches and toys. Also, provide them with a variety of foods to eat and fresh water daily.

5. Take your cockatoo to the vet if they are suddenly screaming. If your cockatoo starts screaming for no apparent reason, it is essential to take them to the vet. Screaming can sometimes be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

6. Be patient and consistent. Training a cockatoo to stop screaming takes time and consistency. Do not get discouraged if you do not see results immediately. Just keep following the above steps, and eventually, your cockatoo will learn that screaming is not a good way to get what they want.
