How to Build a Birdhouse for Finches

Materials:

- 1 (1x6)-ft (2.4m) piece of 1-inch (2.5cm) thick wood (such as pine)

- 2 (1x4)-ft (1.2m) pieces of 1-inch (2.5cm) thick wood (such as pine)

- 1 (2x4)-ft (0.6m) piece of 1-inch (2.5cm) thick wood (such as pine)

- Wood glue

- 1-inch (2.5cm) wood screws

- Drill

- Jigsaw or saw

- Sandpaper

- Paint or varnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cut the wood into the following pieces:

- 2 pieces - 6 inches (15.2cm) x 12 inches (30.4cm) (these will be the front and back of the birdhouse)

- 2 pieces - 6 inches (15.2cm) x 8 inches (20.3cm) (these will be the sides of the birdhouse)

- 1 piece - 6 inches (15.2cm) x 4 inches (10.1cm) (this will be the roof of the birdhouse)

- 1 piece - 6 inches (15.2cm) x 2 inches (5cm) (this will be the floor of the birdhouse)

2. Sand all of the pieces of wood to remove any rough edges.

3. Assemble the front and back pieces of the house to the side pieces using wood glue and 1-inch (2.5cm) nails.

4. Once the main structure is assembled, assemble the roof and the floor also using glue and 1-inch (2.5cm) nails.

Entrance Hole

5. To drill a 1 1/8 inch (2.9cm) diameter entrance hole, measure and mark 2 1/4 inches (5.7cm) down from the top of the front piece of the birdhouse. Then measure 1 5/8 inches (4.1cm) from the left side of the birdhouse and mark. You can use a nail to mark the center.

6. Use the drill to create a pilot hole in the center of the circle. Then, with a jigsaw, cut out the hole. Sand the edges of the hole to smooth them out.

Mounting Hole

7. Optional: To mount your birdhouse, drill a hole in the back of the birdhouse, about 1 inch (2.5cm) from the top. This will allow you to hang your birdhouse from a tree or hook.

8. If desired, paint or varnish the finished birdhouse.

9. Hang your birdhouse in a sheltered area of your garden or yard, and enjoy watching your feathered friends take up residence!
