How to Keep Birds Away From Dog Food
Close All Doors, Including Your Doggie Door
This may sound obvious but it’s possible that when your dog is indoors enjoying their meal, an avian visitor flew into your home and started eating away.
Feed the Dog Inside Instead of Outside
If you’ve ever found yourself frantically swatting at pesky pests, you know the frustration. Instead, bring the food and water bowls indoors. Place them in an elevated area or even in another room.
Bird Proof Bird Feeders
While you may love watching birds flutter around, that doesn’t mean you want them stealing from your furry family member. Instead of completely denying them, simply invest in a bird-proof feeder. This ensures that other animals can’t get inside to munch on the seeds.
Put Aluminum Foil on the Rims
Birds don’t like the feel or sound of aluminum foil. Covering the rims of the bowls with this material can deter them from jumping onto the containers to enjoy a delicious dog treat.
Hang Reflective CDs In the Yard
While dogs may be able to look past the reflective glare of CDs, birds certainly don’t. Hanging a few in the yard can discourage them from landing anywhere near the food.
Add Pepper or Mustard to the Dog Food
You don’t want to douse the food with these two ingredients, but adding just a bit can cause an irritating and unpleasant taste that sends the birds packing.
Use a Spray Bottle Filled with Water
If you happen to catch the birds in action, chase them away with a water spray. Be sure not to use any sprays that could harm your fur babies.
Purchase a Motion Activated Sprinkler
This device can be a great deterrent to unwanted visitors. As soon as it detects movement in the area, the sprinkler turns on.
Put Food and Water Bowls in a Bird Cage
If your doggo is small, you can enclose their eating area inside of a bird cage. If you don’t have one large enough, you can simply cover their bowls with one.
Put a Fake Snake Near the Dog Food
It’s one of nature’s laws: birds are afraid of snakes. Placing a lifelike snake close to the dog food bowls will scare them off.
Use a Bird Spike to Discourage Birds from Landing.
Place a bird spike around the area with the dog’s food and water bowls. Bird spikes are thin, flexible rods that are designed to discourage birds from landing. They can be installed on fences, ledges, and other areas where birds tend to perch.
Cover Dog Food With a Netting
Cover the dog food with a netting to keep the birds away. The netting should be small enough so that the birds cannot get through it but large enough so that your dog can.
