Why Does My Cat Run Around After Pooping?

1. Hunting instinct

Cats are predators at heart, and hunting instinct can be triggered when they release a smell from their poop. When they run around, they are trying to find the source of the smell to track down their prey.

2.Marking Territory

Just like their wild feline cousins, cats mark their territories by leaving their scents around. After a cat poops, they will instinctively run around to disperse the scent further, letting other animals know they are present and claiming their area.

3.Stress or Anxiety

Some cats may run around after pooping due to stress or anxiety. Changes in their environment such as new people or pets, can trigger this behaviour.

4. Seeking Privacy

Cats are instinctively cautious about their "business", preferring a safe place with some degree of privacy. After leaving their mark, they might run around as a way to get away from the vulnerable position of pooping.

5.Trying to bury it

Cats have an instinctual desire to bury their feces to cover their scent and avoid predators finding them. Although domesticated cats don't have this concern as much, the instincts can still kick in.

6. Trying to signal a problem

If your cat starts running around after pooping out of the blue, it could be a sign of an underlying health issue that causes discomfort or pain during elimination. Keep an eye on their behaviour and consult a vet if you notice other symptoms.
