Why Do Cats Roll Around After Mating?

Rolling in Scents:

After mating, both male and female cats may roll around on the ground, picking up various scents from their surroundings. Rolling in these scents not only leaves their own aroma but also exposes them to potential mates and marks their territory, letting others know that they're unavailable.

Repositioning Genitals:

Rolling after mating may serve a more functional purpose related to the mating itself. Female cats typically assume a 'lordosis' position during mating in which their hindquarters are elevated. Post-mating, rolling and stretching helps reposition their genitalia into their normal anatomy.

Post-Orgasmic Satisfaction:

Just like many primates, especially chimpanzees, roll and rock following an orgasm, some theories suggest that post-coital rolling in cats fulfills a similar role, perhaps releasing tension or enhancing sensations of pleasure and satisfaction at the end of mating.

In a nutshell, post-mating rolling in cats likely involves marking behavior, a return to normal genital alignment, possibly some sensual or pleasure enhancement aspect, and potentially cleaning.
