What is Scruffing and Why You Do it To Your Cat?

Scruffing is a technique used to gently restrain a cat by holding the loose skin at the back of their neck. It is a natural instinct for cats to be held this way by their mothers, and it can help to calm and immobilize them.

Why Might You Need to Scruff Your Cat?

There are a number of reasons why you might need to scruff your cat, including:

- To give them medication

- To trim their nails

- To clean their ears or eyes

- To examine them for injuries

- To transport them in a carrier

How to Scruff Your Cat

1. Approach your cat from the front and pet them gently.

2. Once your cat is calm and relaxed, gently take a handful of skin at the back of their neck just above the shoulder blades.

3. With a gentle but firm grip, lift your cat off the ground, keeping their hind legs on the ground.

4. Support your cat's bottom to prevent them from slipping.

5. If your cat becomes agitated, stop scruffing immediately. Once they calm down, you can try again.
