Avery the Ragdoll: A Heartwarming Story of Love, Loss, and Compassion
Avery – Ragdoll of the Week
Over ten years ago I was watching a show on Animal Planet called Cats 101, they profiled the Ragdoll breed and I immediately fell in love with the breed. At the time I had a domestic long haired cat, Mesha, who did not like other cats, and I would have to put a hold on owning a Ragdoll.
In the spring of 2014 Mesha’s kidney failure took a turn for the worse as she had gotten a uti which went to her kidneys. At the age of 17 we had to make the decision to say goodbye to her. My heart was broken as we had been together since college and had moved across the country twice. When I
started looking for a new cat I visited local animal shelters, but I just didn’t feel a connection with any of the cats. I decided I was going to look into the Ragdoll breed and contacted several breeders. I came across Willowtreerags and the breeder, Mable, had posted that an owner was looking to rehome her two cats due to her having medical issues. I contacted both the owner and breeder. The owner said that because I owned a dog, she didn’t think it was best her cats come to live with me as the female was very shy. The breeder had 2 litters available, and she said I was welcome to adopt one of her kittens. She was great at answering all my questions and would send me email updates along with pictures and videos.
Avery was born January 31st, 2014 to Timeless and Hans. Originally the breeder was going to breed him, but she changed her mind. I explained to her that I didn’t care about the color/pattern, I just wanted an affectionate cat who would love to snuggle, she said she had a boy that was exactly what I was looking for. Since he was originally going to be used for breeding, he was 16 weeks old when he joined our family.
Avery got his name from my favorite television show, Grey’s Anatomy. The character Avery Jackson has gorgeous eyes, just like the Ragdoll.
From the moment Avery arrived at his new house he was full of purrs and snuggles. He was always sleeping on my pillows or head and would purr loudly. At first Avery was scared of our dog, PJ.
It took the two of them about 2 weeks to get a long, now they are best of friends and Avery will cry for him when PJ is not around.
I feed Natural Balance and Wellness Core dry food. I have tried many times to get him to eat canned food, but he wants nothing to do with it. The breeder said that Averys’ Dad, Hans, was a very picky eater too. Avery really doesn’t use the cat beds, he prefers to use my electric blanket. He also won’t sleep on my side of the bed, he prefers to be on my boyfriend’s side of the bed by his feet. When I shower Avery sits on the tub and won’t leave my side until I’m done. Avery loves to be brushed and enjoys watching the birds in the neighbors yard. Avery is my love. I look forwarding to owning more Ragdolls in the future.
