Ragdoll Cats of the Week: Pebbles & Spencer
Pebbles and Spencer – Ragdoll Cats of the Week
My Mom had recently died, and she had always wanted a Ragdoll but never had one. One Sunday afternoon I was missing Mom. I picked up my laptop and Googled Ragdoll Breeders Central Florida. I found a breeder a few miles from home. Her website was beautiful. At the bottom of the front page were magical words to me “ask me about my retirees”. I told my husband. We both prefer to adopt adults, cats and dogs. My husband said to go ahead and contact the breeder if I wanted to. At the time we had a wonderful golden retriever and a very docile cat named Cleo.
I emailed the breeder through her website. We emailed back and forth for two weeks. She really questioned me. Finally she invited us over to meet Pebbles. She was, at that time, 5 years old, a retired show cat and now a breeder girl who was no longer able to get pregnant.
We were thrilled to adopt Pebbles. My husband retired from 37 years of teaching high school shortly bringing Pebbles home. Since I was still working full time guess who she bonded with? During my husband’s first year of retirement he read 52 books, every single one with Pebbles sitting with him while he rubbed her neck! My self-professed “dog lover” fell hard! Pebbie is totally his cat; she is beyond loyal to him. He says he is not a cat lover he is a Ragdoll lover!! Pebbie has totally spoiled us. I grew up with up with cats, but never knew any cats like Pebbie. She is the most loving, sweetest, calmest, best mannered and of course so beautiful.
Years later when our Ms Cleo died, after days of me crying my husband asked me if I would like to get another Ragdoll? Absolutely!! First thing I did was look for the breeder’s website where I got Pebbles. Much to our disappointment the site was shut down. So I began a new search. I found Spencer nearby. He was 14 months and already fixed. The breeder told us Spencer loves the ladies. Since he was fixed it’s not that kind of love! She said he loves to snuggle with the girl kitties. Well, Pebbles was not so thrilled, she swatted him and she moved! My husband and I joked that that Pebbles thought “oh no, I have had enough babies you just keep your distance”. Poor Spencer never gives up hope. They are older now, Pebbles is 13 Spencer is 5 and now Pebbles tolerates him lying close to her, snuggling…not quite.
Spencer is our family clown. What a character. He really keeps up laughing, and he has the most serious face. He loves to jump up in the air to catch paper wads my husband throws at him. He amazes us at how high he can jump.
Several months ago I had total knee replacement surgery. I had two of the most devoted “Ragdoll nurses”. They stayed right with me.
My husband and I cannot imagine ourselves without our Ragdolls. Whoever heard of cats who mind? If we say “no” they stop what they are doing. They come when they are called. They are so smart, so affectionate, so calm, so loving, not to mention beautiful, such good cats. We truly are Ragdoll fans.
