10 Celebrities Who Are Passionate Cat Lovers
Celebrities – they’re just like us! Well, maybe not in every respect, but when it comes to cats, you can rest assured that a substantial portion of the rich and famous share our passion for furry felines. Some have a certain emblematic pet whose identity is well-known by now, others prefer the company of multiple cats. Usually they tend to be animal lovers in general, with many also crusading for animal rights in their private lives. With that in mind, here are just some of the cat-loving celebrities who continue to inspire and delight us with their furry companions:
Celebrities with cats:
01. Taylor Swift
Having recently starred in the big-screen adaptation of ‘Cats’, it’s safe to say that Taylor Swift is a big fan of felines in general. Her two most famous companions – Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson – are both named after famous TV characters, but recently Swift has added a third cat to the pack, a furry little kitten named Benjamin Button.
The singer is well-known for her penchant for taking pictures with her cats and then posting them on social media, often in hilarious poses. The cuteness factor is amplified by the fact that her two most iconic cats are both Scottish Folds, while her newest addition belongs to the always-delightful Ragdoll breed.
02. Ricky Gervais
A comedian turned TV star whose famously acerbic wit has gotten him in trouble with other celebrities, Ricky Gervais’ softer side is evidenced by his love of cats. A few years back he even posted a touching tribute to his former cat Colin, who passed away several years ago.
These days, Ricky’s companion is Ollie, a beautiful mixed breed named after Oliver Hardy. The comedian got the cat as a present from Jonathan Ross, and has been documenting their life together ever since. Ollie’s proven to be quite popular on social media, with Facebook and Twitter accounts dedicated to showcasing his awesomeness to the world.
03. Katy Perry
Often considered to be Katy Perry’s mascot of sorts, the aptly-named Kitty Purry first appeared in the singer’s video for hit single ‘I Kissed a Girl’. Since then she has often been photographed by Katy’s side, with fans continuously speculating about her genealogy. From the looks of it, Kitty may be at least part Maine Coon, a breed famous for its large size and puppy-like personality. The singer has confessed to being slightly ‘obsessed’ with her cat, remarking that their relationship has proven to be more stable over the long haul than her romantic affairs.
04. James Franco
As befits an actor with a Ph.D. in English to his name, James Franco’s literary affections have extended to his cats as well. His two most iconic companions were both named after book characters, with Sammy taken from ‘What Makes Sammy Run’ and Zelda being an homage to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous muse. He also two cats named Harry and Arturo who his brother supposedly ‘stole’ from him, and says he was raised as a cat person since childhood. Now that he’s happily married to Alison Brie, the actor has devoted an entire room in his home to his furry companions, ensuring that both Sammy and Zelda will live happy and healthy lives in the years to come.
05. Cameron Diaz
According to her own words, Cameron Diaz lived in a very pet-friendly home. Growing up, her collection included five birds, three dogs, three cats and two snakes! So it’s no surprise that her affection for kitties hasn’t waned in recent years either. Her current companion is called Little Man, and he is known for his distinctive fashion sense. Diaz and Little Man can sometimes be spotted going on shopping sprees together, with the feline reportedly sporting some fancy clothes of his own. Additionally, the actress also takes care of several rescue dogs, including a long-haired Chihuahua and a German shepherd.
06. Kesha
With her crazy antics and original style, Kesha burst onto the pop scene in late 2009 with beloved party anthem “Tik Tok”. Her seemingly carefree life hit its fair share of speed bumps along the way, but the love she has for her cats has always been at the forefront. On Pet Appreciation Day in 2018, Kesha posted a family portrait-type photo alongside her boyfriend and three beloved cats.
Charlie and Queso are both Maine Coons, while Sir. Mr. Peep$ is a cute Siamese that Kesha supposedly found outside of a strip club in Russia. Being the oldest, he used to tour with the singer in the past, but has since retired to enjoy the quiet life alongside his caretakers.
07. Russell Brand
Comedian turned actor turned all-around free thinker Russell Brand is known for both his provocative statements and his dalliances with other famous people, including being married to Katy Perry at one point. He is also a dedicated animal lover, whose cat has been a constant companion by his side for over 15 years now. Named Morrissey after the British singer whose claim to fame was fronting the Smiths back in the 1980s, this furry little thing is a darling on social media, even making an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’s popular talk show.
08. Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore’s love affair with cats started in the 1980s, when the former child star played with a few lovable felines on the set of Stephen King’s ‘Cat’s Eye’. As she matured and eventually started a family of her own, the actress made sure that her children grew up in pet-friendly households as well. Her most recent acquisitions include three adorable kittens taken from a rescue center, whose caretaking duties she shares with her two daughters. Additionally, Drew owns a dog that she also obtained from a rescue center, thus proving that rescued pets are no less lovable and worthy of affection.
09. Ewan McGregor
One of the many Hollywood men with a marked preference for cats, Ewan McGregor is more private than most cat owners. Not much is known about the identity of his furry companions, although a famous picture circulating online shows Ewan and his feline companion bonding over a bowl of oranges. Apparently the actor’s love has been transmitted to his children as well, with Clara and Esther McGregor being proud caretakers of a Sphynx Cat named Azure.
10. Penelope Cruz
This Spanish actress is known for portraying volatile women onscreen, even winning an Oscar for her supporting role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona back in 2008. But in her off-screen life, she too has a soft spot for furry felines. As Penelope tells it, her early years in Hollywood were quite lonely, so she used to take in plenty of stray cats to keep her company. Nowadays, she only has one cat named Capucina, but she still reportedly leaves the window open so that others can come and hang around.
And so we’ve come to the end of our quick review of some of the world’s most famous cat owners. Whatever your personal opinion of the people we’ve mentioned, their passion for pets is an endearing one, and they are far from the only celebrities to publicly display their love.
