Life’s Abundance Premium Wet Cat Food: Nutritious, Flavorful & Vet‑Recommended

No two cats are the same, and that applies to food tastes as much as it does to their look and their personality. One of your cats might love something that another of your cats hates.

It’s always important to remember that when you read a review of a cat food – look for the scientific benefits, but understand that even the ‘best’ cat foods might not be right for your own feline.

Life’s Abundance wet cat food was recommended to me by a reader, so I ordered some and presented it to Charlie and Trigg.  Charlie loved it, Trigg ate it.  But my parents’ 16-year old Ragdoll cats, Caymus and Murphy weren’t interested.

Is Life’s Abundance a good cat food?

It was during a discussion about Ziwi Peak cat food that my reader mentioned that he feeds his cats Life’s Abundance. He pointed out that it’s on the recommended list of canned foods from Dr. Jean Hofve DVM, and he found out about it through an interview that I’d actually conducted with Dr. Jean a while back.

She has a list of foods that she approves of in her eBook, ‘What Cats Should Eat’, but she’s also shared her opinion of Life’s Abundance in this article. She describes it as “the highest quality, lowest-carb, cat-friendliest canned food available”.

To be clear, the article refers to ‘Instinctive Choice’ cat food, which is one of two variants sold on the Life’s Abundance website. However, they are essentially the same, just in different flavors – Dr. Jean talks about them together, but when you shop on the website, you’ll see one is branded as Instinctive Choice and the other is branded as Life’s Abundance.

Whether you choose the organic chicken, turkey, liver, and shrimp Instinctive Choice flavor or the pork and duck Life’s Abundance flavor that I ordered, Dr. Jean recommends them as part of a balanced diet. By that, she states that you should make sure there is variety in what your cat eats so that they get all the nutrients they need.

The reason Dr. Jean recommends Life’s Abundance Pork & Duck is because it is a natural source of proteins and fats, which are the key metabolic needs of a healthy cat.

One of the reasons I chose the pork and duck flavor to try out are because, in Chinese medicine, pork and duck are considered cold meats. Cold meats don’t cause inflammation in the gut, which can help if your cat has gastrointestinal issues.

In terms of what it contains, the pork and duck cans have a minimum of 12% protein and 5% fat, as well as up to 1% fiber.

This is a very high level of protein and so it may not be suited to any cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD). As Dr. Jean states, you should always go through any dietary changes with your vet if your pet suffers from an illness and they might recommend against high-protein foods such as Life’s Abundance.

There’s a lot of moisture in these cans too, which is really important in keeping your cat’s digestive system healthy and their stools regular, especially since cats will normally only decide to drink from a bowl when they are already dehydrated.

It also contains Vitamin E, another essential vitamin for your cat that helps to protect against problems with their muscles, heart and liver.

Life’s Abundance is a BBB A+ accredited business, and has been since 2005. The products were formulated by Dr. Jane Bicks DVM, a renowned vet who is formerly the President of the Veterinary Medical Associated of New York City.
