Preventing Cat Loneliness: Expert Tips for a Happy, Engaged Pet

Cats are a very independent group of animals.  They enjoy their time with friends but, they also love their time alone.  However, too much time alone for a cat can lead to boredom and loneliness.  Cats are less maintenance than dogs because of their independent nature but, they crave human company and stimulation.

Signs your cat may show he’s lonely:

  1. He may destroy things in the home
  2. May act out aggressively to you
  3. May excessively groom themselves or may not groom themselves. It’s all dependent on the personality of the cat
  4. Cats may mark their territories more often

How can you help prevent loneliness in cats:

  1. Keep your cat busy.  Have lots of toys on hand to keep him busy
  2. Give him lots of love and attention
  3. Play music to stimulate him
  4. Get a sibling
  5. Take your cat out for a walk
  6. Cats are visual creatures and they love the outdoors.
  7. Sometimes it may help to let your cat look out the window
  8. Try hiding treats around your home and challenge your cat to find them
  9. Bring your cat to the vet to get a clean bill of health
  10. Consider paying someone to check in on your cat especially if you will be away longer than expected
