Recognizing Urinary Tract Infections in Cats: Key Signs & Symptoms

When you own a cat it is important to be watchful of his behavior.  The reason why you should pay extra close attention is that cats can develop urinary tract infections.

What is a Urinary Tract Infection In Cats (UTI)?

A urinary tract infection affects a cat’s bladder and his ability to urinate.  This can be fatal if not treated immediately.  Feline lower urinary tract disease is characterized by painful urination, blood in the urine and urinating in inappropriate places.  This can affect both male & female cats.

What are the signs to look for?

A sure sign of UTI is a cat straining to urinate.  Female idiopathic cystitis is inflammation of the bladder and this is the most common cause of urinary tract infection in cats.  By straining to urinate this can lead to the development of stones in the bladder and as a result, lead to a blockage in the urethra.

Another sign of a UTI is frequently trying to urinate.  The cat may attempt to get rid of toxic waste but, he is not able to.
The cat may experience pain urinating.  The pain may be excruciating so they may lick their genital area.
The cat may be more irritable than usual.  This is definitely a sign of UTI.

For female cats, they may have bloody urine.

They may urinate in unusual or inappropriate places.  This is a way of letting you know something is wrong. Call your vet and schedule an appointment.  The vet may need to take x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound to see exactly what’s going on with your pet.

Once your cat has gotten a clearance from the vet prevent UTI’s from re-occurring by spending more time with your best friend, giving him more access to windows in the home, more toys to play with and more access to clean litter boxes.

The most important thing is to be aware of anything that ‘s going on with your pet.  Make sure he is not stressed because stress can cause UTI.
