What Your Cat’s Purr Really Indicates

Sheba, a beautiful Calico Cat was up all night purring. Her owner was very troubled to hear Sheba purr all night because it was often considered a sign of happiness and contentment, but it did not sound like she was very happy or content. So lets look at what a cat’s purr could mean:

1-Happy and content-Purring is a sign of happiness and contentment

2-Communication-It is a way for your cat to communicate with you. Just like humans, they communicate by purring

3-When a cat inhales and exhales they purr.

4-Nervousness-Do you know your cat will also purr when he/she is nervous?

5-Sick-They will purr to let you know they are not feeling well.

6-Pain control-If a female cat is in labor she may purr to help her control her pain. Once her kittens arrive their mother’s purr is vital for their survival. Kittens are born deaf and blind but, they can feel the vibrations of their mother’s purring and this will help lead them to her for warmth, safety and food. Kittens can learn to purr as young as 2 days old.

7-Healing benefits-Yes, purring can assist in bone mending and it also helps keep the cat’s bones strong.

8-A way to show other cats they are friendly and approachable. This is very important for socialization purposes.

Cats are wonderful pets so let’s keep them happy, healthy and active for as long as we have them. They are a great stress reliever to their owners. So keep on stroking your cat.
