Why Are Cats Always Underfoot?
Cats spend a significant portion of their time sleeping. An adult cat's daily routine generally involves around 15 to 20 hours of sleep, while kittens may sleep for up to 22 hours per day.
To fully understand a cat's inclination for sleep, we must consider their evolutionary background and predatory instincts. Cats descended from small, solitary carnivores known as crepuscular hunters, which means they were most active during twilight times of the day. This behaviour allowed them to remain concealed while awaiting opportunities to hunt prey.
Today's domesticated cats still possess these ingrained instincts. They instinctively conserve energy during the day, allowing them to maintain a high level of alertness and energy during their active periods, usually at dawn and dusk. While we see cats sleeping during these twilight times, they may become more energetic and engaged in play.
