How to Get Kittens Out of a Hole
What to do:
#1. Determine the best way to get to them.
First, determine if the kittens are under or behind the porch, patio, stairs or other structure that you can easily access. If so, look for an obvious way to get to them. If you cannot see the kittens or there is no way to reach them through an existing opening, you might have to cut or make an access point to reach the kittens.
Be careful not to start digging wildly because you might hurt or traumatize the kittens further as well as causing damage to any underlying or surrounding pipes or wires. If cutting or digging is necessary, only start work when you have determined that it’s safe and practicable.
#2. Create an easy exit route for the kittens.
Once you have figured out how to reach the kittens, create an easy exit route for them.
To do this, place one end of a wide plank, sturdy piece of cardboard or carpet into the area where the kittens are and let the other end lean out of the opening on the other side of the structure onto the ground or lawn to give them a gentle pathway to climb down.
If the surface at the bottom of the escape route is uneven or covered in debris, clear a landing spot for the kittens that is as smooth and level as possible.
#3. Enclose the kittens in the area so they don’t escape.
Block off any routes of escape other than the one you’ve created so that the kittens won’t run off once you startle them.
#4. Prepare to catch them.
Put on gardening or heavy work gloves and arm yourself with a small blanket, towel or pillowcase.
Try to stay as quiet and still as possible while you position yourself to catch the kittens.
Avoid fast, sudden movements or sounds as this could startle them and make it harder to capture them.
#5. Reach through the access point and encourage the kittens to walk onto the escape route.
Talk softly and reassuringly to the kittens as you reach in to touch them.
If the kittens are scared about being touched, you can try a long-handled net to gently lift them out of the hole as quickly and safely as possible.
If there is more than one kitten, keep an eye on the others to make sure they don’t climb out at another point and run off.
#6. Once you have all the kittens safely out, carefully transport them indoors.
Place them in a warm, safe, dry place where you will keep them until you are able to get them the proper care.
Contact a local animal shelter or veterinarian for help and guidance on how to proceed.
Tips:
- If the hole that you’ve found the kittens in is on the side of a road, take extra care to block their possible exits at the other side.
- If you are unable to reach or retrieve the kittens, don't abandon them! Keep the area as quiet and undisturbed as possible, provide food and water nearby and call your local animal welfare agency.
