What Are the Symptoms of a Cat Going Into Labor?

Cats typically show the following signs when they are getting ready to give birth (also known as "queening"):

1. Nesting Behavior: A few days before labor, queens (pregnant cats) start searching for and creating a quiet and safe nesting spot. They might dig up bedding or rearrange blankets to make a comfortable environment for birth.

2. Restlessness and Vocalization: As the labor approaches, your cat may exhibit restlessness and increased vocalization. She might meow or cry more frequently.

3. Decreased Activity: Queens tend to sleep more and display less activity in the lead-up to labor. They conserve energy in preparation for the delivery.

4. Loss of Appetite: Reduced food intake or loss of appetite is common in the final stages before labor. Some cats only nibble on food without eating full meals.

5. Enlarged Abdomen: The queen's abdomen expands significantly as the kittens grow before birth. However, keep in mind that every cat's body shape and pregnancy will be slightly different.

6. Changes in Body Temperature: A cat's body temperature usually drops by 1-2°F approximately six to 24 hours before the onset of labor.

7. Clear Vaginal Discharge: As labor nears, cats may experience a clear discharge from the vagina. This discharge isn't always noticeable.

8. Licking Genitals: Some cats clean and lick their genital area more frequently as the moment of labor gets closer.

If you suspect your cat is going into labor and these signs manifest, be prepared. Provide a secure nesting area, ensure there's fresh water nearby, and try to create a calming atmosphere in the household. However, if you have any significant concerns, don't hesitate to contact your veterinarian, especially if this is your cat's first litter. It's always better to have an expert on hand if there are complications during feline labor.
