How to Treat Lice on Cats

1.Over the Counter Shampoo

There are a number of over-the-counter shampoos that are effective in killing lice on cats. Look for a shampoo that contains pyrethrins or permethrin, which are insecticides that are safe for use on cats.

2.Prescription Medication

If your cat has a severe case of lice, your veterinarian may prescribe a medication such as selamectin (Revolution) or fipronil (Frontline) these are topical treatments used to treat and prevent flea and tick infestations. However, they are also effective against lice.

3.Home Remedy

You can also try using a homemade lice treatment made with vinegar and water. Mix equal parts vinegar and water and apply it to your cat's fur. Leave the mixture on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it out with warm water.

4.Comb the Lice Out

After treating your cat with shampoo, you can use a fine-toothed comb to remove any remaining lice and their eggs (nits) from the coat. Dip the comb in soapy water as you go to help loosen and remove the lice and nits.

5.Clean the environment

In order to ensure that your cat does not get lice again, it is important to clean the environment. Wash all bedding, curtains, and other fabrics that your cat may have come in contact with in hot water. Vacuum the floors and furniture thoroughly, and dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag immediately.
