Patches’ House

We found her in the hedge, softly mewing “hello” as if testing our kindness. Each evening she joined us on the stoop, letting our hands inch closer, her fur dusted with mites that made us itch but swelled our hearts.

Neighbors said she’d been abandoned years ago, yet she never left—watching over the home she once knew. We even spotted her in a real‑estate photo, perched like she owned the place. That’s when we realized we hadn’t adopted Patches; we had moved into her house. Now she reigns as our sassy queen of the couch! — Mirelle Inglefield

Yo, Josie!

Josie greeted us in an unusual way. The Cat Who Made Me Love Him

I was never a cat person, but fate introduced me to Monsieur. I kept an uneasy peace with Peanut and Pushkin, tolerated Tugsie, and then my daughter left me her kitten for six months. Monsieur took up residence beside my laptop. One day he sniffed my face and squeaked, “Rah.” I echoed, “Rah,” and a quirky conversation began. An Unlikely Souvenir

On a humid June night in South Carolina, a tiny orange‑white kitten emerged from the brush, paws oversized and eyes wide with hunger. Our youngest child first pet him and named him Mimou. He survived thunderstorms and even a juvenile alligator nearby.

After losing a beloved ginger cat to cancer, I visited a shelter hoping to honor him. An older orange cat with a tipped ear leapt to my side and began to purr. Shelters called her “Garfield”; I renamed her Frieda—a nod to her perseverance.

Better Late Than Never

My husband and I were married for 30 years before we became cat owners. Through a neighbor, we adopted five‑year‑old Coco (formerly Squeak), and life has never been the same.
