Do Chameleons Bite?

Chameleons generally have tiny, weak jaws that are used to grasp and manipulate food. Their primary method of hunting involves using their long tongues to catch prey. It's extremely rare for a chameleon to bite a human. Even when threatened or handled, they usually resort to other defensive behaviors, such as hissing, biting the air, and changing colors. However, if a chameleon does bite, it will typically be a mild nip that feels like a small pinch. Unless there are underlying medical conditions, the bites are not considered harmful to humans and don't usually cause any venom effects.
