How Can I Tell If a Tadpole Is Male or Female?
Tadpoles are difficult to sex (determine the gender of) when they are young, but as they reach maturity, secondary sex characteristics develop, making it easier to tell males and females apart.
Male tadpoles:
- Develop larger, darker colored vocal sac(s)
- Have a longer, more pointed tail
- Tend to be more aggressive and territorial
Female tadpoles:
- Have smaller, lighter colored vocal sac(s),
- Have a shorter, rounder tail
- Are generally less aggressive and more social
