How Do Dogs Give Birth?

Preparation: The average gestation period for dogs is approximately 63 days. Towards the end of this period, the mother will display signs of impending labor. These may include:

- Nesting behavior: The dog will start seeking out a quiet and secluded spot to prepare her nest.

- Restlessness: The mother may seem more restless and agitated than usual.

- Reduced food intake: Her appetite may decrease, or she may refuse food altogether.

- Increased panting and licking: Panting and licking the genitals are signs of discomfort and preparation.

Parturition:

1. First Stage - Dilation: The cervix dilates to allow the puppies to pass through. This stage can last several hours and may be accompanied by straining and discomfort.

2. Second Stage - Expulsion: The mother dog experiences strong contractions that help push the puppies out. Each puppy is usually wrapped in a membrane that the mother will break, and then she will lick the puppy to remove any remaining membrane or fluid.

3. Third Stage - Placental Delivery: After each puppy is born, the mother will expel the placenta. It's important to make sure that all placentas are delivered, as they can cause health issues if left inside.

Post-birth:

1. Cord Cutting: The mother dog usually breaks the umbilical cord, but if she doesn't, it can be gently torn or cut with sterile scissors about an inch from the puppy's belly.

2. Nursing: Once the puppies are born and cleaned, they will instinctively start looking for the mother's teats to nurse. The mother dog will provide them with milk, which is essential for their nourishment and development.

3. Care and Monitoring: Keep the whelping area clean and provide the mother with plenty of food and water. Closely monitor the mother and puppies to ensure everything progresses normally.

If you're unsure about any aspect of the birthing process, it's always best to consult with your veterinarian.
