How to Know When a Dog Is Done Giving Birth

1. Decreased contractions: As the dog approaches the end of labor, the frequency and intensity of contractions will decrease. The dog may pant or lick her vulva less frequently, and the contractions may be less noticeable.

2. Passage of the placenta: After the last puppy is born, the dog will pass the placenta. The placenta is a dark, reddish-brown organ that lines the uterus. It will usually pass within 30 minutes to an hour after the last puppy is born.

3. Resting and licking puppies: After the placenta is passed, the dog will rest and lick her puppies. She may also nuzzle them and try to get them to nurse.

4. No more puppies: If the dog has not passed any more puppies for several hours, and there are no signs of labor (contractions, panting, licking the vulva), then it is likely that she is done giving birth.

5. Signs of distress: If the dog is showing any signs of distress, such as straining, vomiting, or bleeding heavily, then it is important to take her to the vet immediately.

6. Other indications that the dog has finished giving birth:

- The dog may lay down and appear satisfied and tired

- The dog's breathing may become slower

- The dog's temperature should start dropping

- The dog may not want to eat or drink for a few days

- The dog may have a slight vaginal discharge for several days

NOTE: It's important to keep an eye on the mother dog and her puppies over the next few days. Make sure the puppies are nursing and gaining weight, and that the mother dog is not showing any signs of illness.
