Havanese Dog Breed Information
Brief History
The origin of the Havanese dog breed dates as far back as the 1800s. And they are assumed to have the now extinct Bichón Tenerife as ancestors.
It is worth mentioning that this breed is known for its devoted companionship to the elite class in Cuba.
Though American breeders picked interest in the Havanese dog in the 1970s, it was not until 1996 before the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
And the Havanese dog breed has increased in popularity ever since. Presently, it ranks 22 in the AKC Most Popular Dog Breeds List (2020).
Appearance
In describing the appearance of the Havanese dog breed, the first thing that comes to mind is its long, soft, wavy, and or straight hairy coat.
Additionally, the Havanese dog features very calm eyes, drop ears, and cuddly body. It is small and muscular.
Also, the upper arms are short with a moderate shoulder layback and a straight topline.
I also like the feathered tail, which is carried curved-forward up over the back. Common coat colours for this dog are white, cream, fawn, red, beige, gold, silver, etc.
On average, it weighs about 13 pounds and can be up to 11.5 inches in height. This dog has an admirable whippy gait.
Personality
Very sociable! Indeed they are. Havanese dogs are very affectionate. They love to spend time with their owners, playing games and learning new tricks.
To say the least, these dogs are hyperactive and always happy. They are also very intelligent and easy to train.
Life Span
A healthy Havanese can live up to 10 – 15 years.
Activities
Havanese dogs are great at walking, trick learning, dog shows, and sometimes therapy.
Health Risks
Nobody loves to read this, I know, but I must say it as it is. Your havanese dog is naturally healthier than most dogs.
However, here are some diseases associated with the breed that you should note:
Hip Dysplasia: weakened hip joint following abnormal growth and development.
Elbow Dysplasia: degenerative disease of the elbow joint that can lead to lameness.
Chondrodysplasia: a genetic disorder that results in short limbs and sometimes crippling.
Legg-Perthes Disease: a deformity of the hip joint ball due to a shortage of blood supply to the femur bone.
Cataracts: an inherited disease that affects the lens of the eyes and may result in blindness.
Deafness: can be managed using vibrating collars to make life easier for dog and owner.
Patellar Luxation: the inappropriate lining of the patella (a bone in the knee), which causes lameness or an abnormal gait.
Portosystemic Shunt: an abnormal blood flow that leads to the circulation of toxins.
Mitral Valve Insufficiency: failure of the mitral valve (located in the heart) that can lead to hypertension, fluid in the lungs, and weak heart muscles.
Ps: always ask for health clearances before adopting a puppy or older dog.
Care
Your havanese requires all the care in the world. The following are the care tips you shouldn’t miss:
- Take him for a regular lengthy walk
- Engage him in an active game like ‘fetch’ daily.
- Patiently give him all the required training like crate training.
- Ensure he is not alone for long periods.
- Feed him 1/2 to 1 cup of high-quality dry food daily (can vary depending on age, size, bodybuild, metabolism rate, and activity level).
- Brush and comb him three or more times a week for a mat-free coat.
Moving on, we will look at the main reason that brought us here.

6 Best Havanese Puppy Cut
Apart from looking the hottest, giving your dog a havanese puppy cut can prevent skin diseases that result from an untidy coat.
As promised, I described 6 best havanese puppy cut that you can give your dog. Have a look:
1. Long Havanese Puppy Cut
This is the most natural look for your dog. It involves letting your dog’s hair grow long and fall nicely.
Long enough that the tips almost touch the floor. And when he stands, you can barely see his legs and feet.
All you need to do here is to part down the middle of his back and brush down the hairs. Also, you will need to bath and brush your dog every 2 days.
Poor grooming may cause the hair to tangle or mat.
In the end, you’ll have a beautiful pup covered in a carpet of hair. So pretty!
2. Short Havanese Puppy Cut
Here, the goal is to create the look of a puppy that is yet to grow her full coat.
You simply trim the hair short, like a quarter-inch or a little more. The right scissors number will help you do a good job.
This is a good option if you won’t have the time to maintain long hair. A short hair requires brushing once in a week or 2 then another trim every few months.
This haircut is also preferable if you don’t have plans of taking our dog to the show ring. It creates a cute look for an active dog.
3. Alternate Havanese Puppy Cut
For the 3rd havanese puppy cut on our list, we have a gorgeous choice. Alternate havanese puppy cut includes both short and long hair in one dog.
You leave out the parts of your dog where you want the hair long and flowing and trim the rest.
The most common approach is to trim the body hair short and leave longer hairs on the legs or feet. Thus, creating a ‘booties’ look.
Another option is to trim the hair around the head into a short bob. Or, try dropping the hairs at the ears and tail then trimming those around the eyes into a furrow.
Just be creative about it. And you will love the outcome!
4. Fancy Hair Havanese Puppy Cut
Another havanese puppy cut you can try is using some hair accessories to create the most amazing look for your dog.
Top options here are creating A single topknot or two, and Pigtails with bows or ribbons.
You can also pull the hair out of the face using doggie-safe barrettes, or braid two sides of his hair.
It’s all about making your dog’s hair look attractive. You will have to leave the hair a little longer on his head to achieve this look.
This hairstyle saves your dog the trouble of having long hair all over.
5. Corded Havanese Puppy Cut
This is a unique hairstyle that makes your Havanese appear to have dreadlocks or rope-like-coat.
You achieve this by separating your dog’s coat into different sections of hair and leaving them to grow together.
It requires patience for desired results as it may take close to 2 years before your dog becomes fully corded.
To maintain this Havanese puppy cut, you only need to bathe your dog regularly, no brushing.
And for perfect bath time, you will lather and rinse each cord separately, squeeze out the water, and dry properly.
6. Teddy Bear Havanese Puppy Cut
Just like the name sounds, for this hairstyle, you are trying to create a teddy bear look for your Havanese dog.
It can be achieved by trimming the hair on your dog’s body to be the same length and allowing the hair in the head area to be fluffy.
The ideal length for the hair on the body is 3 inches. Try to make the hair on the head fluffy and round. This creates a super cute look.
A good approach would be to make the hair on his face and around the ears a bit long and smooth.
Pro tip: invest in quality dog hair products like shampoo, conditioner, comb, dryer, etc. for the best results.

There you have them, my 6 Best Havanese puppy cut you can try on your dog. And just so you know, there are no rules here. You can try all the different styles on your dog as he ages.
Also, you don’t have to do it by yourself if you don’t feel confident. There is always a professional groomer that can come to your rescue.
