Do Dogs Know When Being Annoying?

While dogs may display behaviors that can be perceived as annoying by humans, their understanding of the concept of annoyance is not the same as ours. Dogs act based on their natural instincts, training, environmental factors, and emotional states. They respond to stimuli and situations rather than intentionally trying to annoy or disrupt humans. For instance, a dog barking at the doorbell does so because of its protective instincts, not because it wants to be bothersome. Additionally, there is currently no scientific consensus on whether dogs possess a theory of mind, which would enable them to understand and consider others' perspectives and emotions, including annoyance.
