Why Is My Dog So Itchy?
Allergies are a very common cause of itchiness in dogs. Certain foods, plants, and environmental allergens (like pollen) can cause a dog's immune system to produce histamine, which causes the skin to itch.
Fleas and ticks
Fleas and ticks can cause intense itching in dogs. These parasites feed on a dog's blood and their bites can cause skin irritation. Fleas can be tough to get rid of and can transmit diseases like tapeworm. Ticks can also transmit diseases, including Lyme disease.
Dog mites
Dog mites are small parasites that live on a dog's fur and skin. They can cause intense itching and can also transmit diseases like mange. There are two main types of dog mites: Demodex mites and Sarcoptes mites. Demodex mites are usually found in low numbers on dogs and do not typically cause problems. However, in some dogs, they can multiply rapidly and cause a condition called demodicosis, or mange. Sarcoptes mites are not normally found on dogs and can cause a contagious form of mange.
Skin infections
Skin infections can also cause itching in dogs. These infections can be caused by bacteria, fungi, or yeast. Certain skin conditions, like eczema and dermatitis, can also cause itching.
Thyroid problems
Hypothyroidism, which is an underactive thyroid, can cause a dog's skin to become dry, flaky, and itchy.
Cancer
Some types of cancer, like lymphoma, can cause itchiness in dogs.
Contact dermatitis
This occurs when your dog’s skin comes into contact with an allergen or irritant, such as shampoo, fabric softeners, pesticides and fertilizers.
Atopy
Also called inhalant allergy, this is a common and chronic condition in which your dog’s skin reacts to allergens such as pollen, mold spores, dust mites and pet dander.
Food allergies
These can cause skin problems such as itching and dryness. Some of the most common allergens include beef, dairy products, chicken, eggs, wheat and soy.
Insect bites and stings
Bee stings and spider bites can cause itching, redness, swelling and pain. Some insects can cause an allergic reaction.
Sunburn
Can cause itching, redness and pain.
