Basset Hound Intervenes When Puppy Brother Gets All the Attention

Attention is a valued commodity for many pets, and basset hounds are no exception. In a recent TikTok video, Maple the basset hound steps in when her puppy brother Sherlock receives all the pats, asserting her own turn for affection.

“Maple is always the moment, no matter how smushy Sherlock may be,” reads the caption, as Maple blocks the camera and enjoys a few pats while Sherlock tries to squeeze back in. Personal space? Not for these playful pups.

If you’ve ever seen a dog with long, drooping ears, soulful eyes, a compact body, and a nose glued to the ground, you’ve likely encountered a basset hound. Originating in France as a rabbit‑hunting breed, these low‑slung scent hounds possess one of the most acute noses in the canine world, second only to the bloodhound. Their characteristic sagging ears help funnel scent particles toward the nose while tracking.

Despite their tracking prowess, basset hounds are renowned for a laid‑back temperament. They thrive as couch companions and often prefer lounging with their favorite human. Their intelligence and independence mean they may follow a scent before obeying commands, so consistent training is essential to channel their focus.

Adult basset hounds typically weigh 40–65 lb (18–29 kg) while standing under 15 in (38 cm) at the shoulder, giving them a sturdy appearance despite their modest height. Their short, smooth coats are easy to groom, but the long ears and loose skin require regular cleaning to prevent odor and infection. Although they appear lazy, an intriguing scent can spark vigorous activity, so a well‑fitted harness or secure fencing is recommended.
