How to Encourage a Mother Dog To Feed Her Puppies

1. Make sure the mother dog is healthy and well-nourished.

A mother dog who is sick or malnourished may not have enough milk to feed her puppies. Offer her a high-quality diet that is specifically designed for lactating dogs, and make sure she has plenty of fresh water available.

2. Provide a quiet and comfortable place for the mother dog to nurse her puppies.

The mother dog needs to feel safe and relaxed in order to produce milk. Choose a spot that is away from noise and foot traffic, and make sure the bedding is clean and comfortable.

3. Encourage the puppies to nurse.

Immediately after birth, rub the puppies gently to help them find the mother's nipples. If the puppies are having trouble nursing, you can express some milk from the mother's nipples and feed it to them yourself.

4. Be patient.

It may take a few days for the mother dog to start producing milk, and several weeks for her to reach her full milk production. Don't worry if the puppies seem hungry in the meantime. They will get the nutrients they need from the mother's colostrum, which is a fluid that is produced in the mother's first few days of milk production.

5. Supplement the puppies' diet if necessary.

If the mother dog is not producing enough milk, you will need to supplement the puppies' diet with puppy formula.

6. Wean the puppies gradually.

Once the puppies are around 4 weeks old, you can start to wean them. Slowly decrease the amount of formula you are supplementing their diet with until they are fully weaned by 8 to 12 weeks old.
