How to Tell the Difference Between Male & Female African Cichlids

There are several ways to tell the difference between male and female guppies.

1. Body shape: Male guppies are generally more slender and streamlined than females. Females have a fuller, rounder body, especially in the belly area.

2. Fins: Male guppies have larger, more elaborate fins than females. The caudal (tail) fin of a male guppy is often longer and more flowing than that of a female. The dorsal (back) fin of a male guppy is also larger and more pointed.

3. Color: Male guppies are generally more brightly colored than females. They may have a variety of colors, including red, orange, yellow, blue, and green. Females are typically a duller color, such as brown, gray, or olive.

4. Size: Male guppies are generally smaller than females. The average size of a male guppy is about 1.5 inches, while the average size of a female guppy is about 2 inches.

5. Behavior: Male guppies are more active and playful than females. They are also more likely to swim in the upper levels of the tank. Females are more likely to swim in the middle or lower levels of the tank.

6. Genital papilla: This is a small, fleshy protrusion located on the underside of the fish, near the tail. In males, the genital papilla is pointed, while in females, it is rounded or blunt.
