When Do Puppies Start Marking Their Territory?
Male puppies usually start marking their territory when reaching puberty. This is the time when their testosterone levels rise and they become sexually mature. Marking behavior is a way for male dogs to communicate with other dogs and establish their dominance. They will often mark in areas where they feel threatened, insecure or where there is a lot of activity.
There are several things you can do to discourage your puppy from marking inside your home. First, make sure he is neutered. Neutering will help to reduce his testosterone levels and make him less likely to mark. Second, provide him with plenty of opportunities to urinate outside. This means taking him for regular walks and letting him out in the yard frequently. Third, clean up any urine accidents immediately and thoroughly. This will help to remove the smell of urine, which can attract your puppy to mark in the same spot again.
If you are having trouble stopping your puppy from marking, talk to your veterinarian. They can help you develop a behavior modification plan that is right for your puppy.
