If you want to adopt a dog, but tend to have allergic reactions by having contact with a pet, you should choose a breed called “hypoallergenic”. We have selected 10 for you.
A dog said to be “hypoallergenic” is not scientific truth. Indeed, no dog is 100% hypoallergenic. However, some breeds produce fewer allergenic agents thanks to their natural characteristics, so they are by definition less allergenic . These breeds won’t keep you from allergic irritation 100%, but hair, dead skin cells, and their saliva will be a lot less of a problem for you. Your allergic attacks will therefore not be as severe.
Discover below the specificities of each of the breeds that make up our top 10 hypoallergenic dogs:
Poodle

The Poodle is an active intelligent dog known for its elegance. Under its dense and curly coat, the Poodle loses little hair and dead cells . It thus produces very few allergenic agents . An asset that will be perfect for people allergic to dog hair. Another advantage of this breed: it does not experience seasonal moulting. On the other hand, for all Poodle lovers, know that it is important to take it to the groomer several times a year in order to take care of this silky coat.
Kerry Blue Terrier

The Kerry Blue Terrier is a very sociable dog who is able to show unwavering loyalty to its owner. Very friendly, it is a dog perfectly adapted to allergy sufferers since its coat does not lose hair and thus reduces your exposure to the allergenic agents responsible for your discomfort. His coat still requires regular baths.
Chinese Crested Dog

This dog is suitable for those who suffer from severe allergic attacks. Indeed, the hair is almost non-existent on this breed which considerably reduces the risks for people allergic to dog hair. On the other hand, this characteristic makes the dog particularly vulnerable to external aggressions such as rain, wind or cold. It is therefore important to protect it against these.
Bichon Maltese

This dog is an excellent pet that can easily live up to 15 years. He is sociable, affectionate, full of energy and very intelligent. It is particularly suitable for people with allergies since its skin produces very few dead cells . In addition, it hardly salivates (the saliva of dogs can also contain allergens responsible for triggering allergies in dogs). However, its fur requires a lot of maintenance and almost daily brushing and several visits to the groomer every year.
Labradoodle (cross between Poodle and Labrador-Retriever )

This crossbreed dog between Labrador and Poodle is very popular. It was created especially at the request of a visually impaired person in the 80’s and allergic to dog hair. This person was looking for a service dog with the specificity of being hypoallergenic . This is how breeders tried to respond to his request and that, no doubt, of many people in his situation. They then crossed a Labrador (for its assistantship skills) with a Poodle (hypoallergenic breed – see above). Thus was born the Labradoodle which is therefore perfectly suitable for allergy sufferers.
Schnauzer

The Schnauzer is known to be a strong and very energetic dog. His rough coat is interesting since he sheds very little and hardly knows any losses . Ideal for people with allergies. However, be sure to take care of this precious hair with one brushing per week. He will give it back to you very well.
Soft-haired Irish Terrier

The soft-haired Irish Terrier is a jovial, playful and energetic dog. But the peculiarity that interests us lies in its wavy coat which does not present any undercoat . Due to this characteristic, it loses little hair and the softness of the coat prevents it from tangling. Assets that will protect you from allergies to dogs. He will only ask you (or not) to perform a bi-weekly brushing to keep his hair in excellent condition.
Portuguese Water Dog

This water dog is an excellent swimmer. But that’s not really what makes it successful anymore. Indeed, its hypoallergenic nature was popularized by the former President of the United States, Barack Obama . When he occupied the White House, the latter was looking for a hypoallergenic breed, because one of his daughters was allergic . The adoption of Bo , a Portuguese Water Dog, in 2009 allowed the breed to experience an unexpected gain in notoriety beyond its native country (Portugal). Today, it is therefore a very well-known breed among people with allergies to dogs.
Bichon frize

Formerly called the Bichon de Tenerife, the Bichon frize has a fine, silky, supple coat, but a little corkscrew , which is what makes the main physical characteristic of the breed. It has the advantage of losing very little hair , which makes it a so-called hypoallergenic dog . Be careful, this particular hair requires very diligent care since it will have to be brushed very frequently and washed several times a year in order to avoid the appearance of knots.
Shih Tzu

The Shih-Tzu is a good-looking dog, very playful and endowed with boundless energy. If he is often singled out for his stubbornness when it comes to obeying, he is a dog who learns only through fun. For people with allergies, it is an ideal dog since it does not lose hair . It produces very little dander (dead skin), so it is as such a hypoallergenic dog.
