Joanie and Chachi – Best Dog Friends Get Adopted Together

On July 10 animal control officers picked up two stray dogs that were found wandering the streets of Savannah, Georgia.

The two looked like the ultimate odd couple, a 65 pound white Pitbull mix and an 8 pound Chihuahua mix. The Pitbull was carrying the Chihuahua who had a bad eye infection.

The dogs had been spotted together before; the Pitbull now named Joanie was seen caring for Chahi the Chihuahua as best she could.

She’d been seen carrying him around for weeks, occasionally setting him down to lick and clean his eye.

“When we got on scene and examined it a little bit closer, we found out that it was a pretty significant injury and that Chachi was in quite a bit of pain,” said Animal Control officer Christina Sutherin. “He couldn’t see out of his left side, and to compensate for that, Joanie felt the need to pick him up and carry him around wherever she felt the need to go.”

The dogs had to be briefly separated while they were accessed and treated by animal control.

Unfortunately Chachi’s eye was so badly injured a veterinarian had to remove it.

On July 22 the two best friends were reunited again and shelter staff and the local police department set out to find them a new home together.

Less than a week later the announcement was made that a home had been found for both, the dog friends are going to be adopted together.

The two made national headlines earlier this week when their story went viral.

They’ll be moving to their new forever home in Florida in August after their inoculations have been cleared.
