Understanding Why Dogs Pant: Key Reasons Explained
Have you ever wondered why your dog pants? Well, there are several important reasons why he may pant. Panting is breathing with short, quick breaths almost like a puff. It may look almost like he is out of breath but, this action is very important to keeping your pet’s body temperature cool. Dogs do not sweat like humans. They actually sweat through their paw pads and panting helps to circulate the air through their bodies to cool them down.
Another reason your dog may pant is to relieve stress. Just like humans, dogs need to relieve stress. Panting helps to calm them down. If your pet is faced with a stressful situation, he will pant to show you his discomfort. Do not yell at him! This is a very normal reaction.
Dogs will also pant when they experience pain. Maybe, he has an injury that still hurts. Remember our babies cannot vocalize their feelings to us. They show us in different ways that something is wrong. If he is in pain, pay attention to his panting. He may pant at odd times of the day or night. He may also drool excessively. You know your pet and you know his habits. If you believe he is in pain do not self medicate him with over the counter drugs. Bring him to the vet. Make sure to tell the vet his symptoms, how well he is eating and how often he is going to the bathroom. It is important to tell the vet everything pertaining to the well being of your pet.
Dogs will also pant when they have heart conditions, respiratory conditions or infections. Panting is very beneficial for your pet’s health. However, make sure to keep a watchful eye over your pet at all times because if his panting becomes excessive it may be an indication of something more serious.
