Understanding Dog Bloating: Signs, Risks, and Immediate Care for Your Pet

Any sized dog can experience bloating however, large and giant breed dogs are more susceptible to this condition. Bloating is a topic that is not widely talked about so many pet parents may not be aware that their pet may be suffering from it.  It is a condition however, that if  left untreated can be dangerous or maybe even deadly.

Bloating occurs when the stomach becomes swollen with gas, fluid or food.  The abdomen (belly) will feel tight to the touch.  This is such an uncomfortable feeling because it puts pressure on other organs in the dog’s body.  This strain will lead to breathing difficulty, a lack of blood to he other organs such as the heart and stomach and may tear down the the stomach wall.

Bloating in some cases will create a condition vets refer to as Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV).  The canine’s stomach will twist and trap the blood in the stomach thus preventing it from flowing throughout the body.  This will cause the animal to go into shock and can lead to death it not immediately treated.

What are the symptoms of bloating:

-A swollen belly

-Unable to rest or relax

-Painful sounds, panting

-Nervous and agitated

-Trying to vomit but, not able to

-Excessive salivation or drooling

If left untreated bloating may become worse and conditions may become grave and eventually lead to:

-An increased heartbeat

-A weak feeling which may lead to collapse

-Shortness of breath

-Death

Seek medical attention immediate.  Your’s pet’s life may be depend on it.

What are the causes of bloating?

-A pet eating quickly

-Drinking too much

-Stress ( yes, stress can be a factor)

-Playing or running after eating

-Breed of pet (large or giant breeds are susceptible).  Pay attention to small and medium breeds as well.  Small pets may overeat if they are not watched carefully. Bloating can be very painful for any animal.

-Hereditary factors.  A close relative may have experienced this.

-Eating 1 large meal a day

Pay attention to what your pet may be trying to say.

How to prevent bloating:

-Limit exercise and water before and after eating

-Do not breed a dog that had a close relative with bloating

-Avoid giving him a single large meal.  Instead of 1 large meal divide the food into 2 smaller servings

-Feed him from a bowl on the ground.  Do not raise the bowl

-Include some wet food

-Do not feed him dry food with a high oil or fat content

-Wait 2 hours after eating to exercise

-Invest in a food dish that forces your pet to eat slower.
