What is the Mini Goldendoodle’s Original Purpose?

Did you know that the mini Goldendoodle is a hybrid breed classified as a teddy bear dog?

As the smaller version of the traditional Golden Retriever Poodle mix, the mini Goldendoodle dog breed is the result of crossing a Toy Poodle or Miniature Poodle with a Golden Retriever.

When Did Goldendoodles Originate?

The breed of Goldendoodles began in the United States in the 1990s. This era was bringing the rise of “designer dogs,” which are dogs that have been purposefully mixed with other dog breeds. Ever since the standard Goldendoodle was first bred, people thought they were so cute and adorable.

Why Were Goldendoodles Bred?

Besides being popular and designer, these dogs have a scientific reason behind their origins. And aside from being great companions, they were actually meant to be good for allergy sufferers. The reasoning is behind the Poodle as this breed has a hypoallergenic reputation. Though, it is contrary that Poodles do actually shed. About the Golden Retriever

We all know how the Golden Retriever holds up to its name. The dog breed’s golden coat comes in many shades of gold. Also, this breed has a history of being a hunting dog, retrieving waterfowl originally. If you enjoy hunting dogs, but you think that most of them aren’t very adorable, the Golden Retriever might change your mind.

The Golden Retriever is one of the top three Poodle mixes and has been on the American Kennel Club (AKC) in the last several years. This dog breed is known as being the most friendly and personable, with a family-friendly temperament. It only makes sense why this breed would be a favorite in its own right.

Golden Retriever dogs are a smart dog breed, usually gentle with kids, and they usually get along well with other dogs. A Golden Retriever can make for a great emotional support animal, therapy dog, or service animal, as well.

It is no wonder why many people want a dog that is a cross between a Golden.

About the Poodle

Many do not know this, but Miniature and Toy Poodles are not separate breeds, only different sizes as categories in the breed. The AKC recognizes all three sizes of the one Poodle breed. The standard Miniature Poodle ranges from 10 to 15 inches, and Toy Poodles are smaller at less than 10 inches tall. And did you know? Poodles are known for being extremely smart dogs.

Poodles are also known for being easy to train and being intelligent. They are a fun-loving, active, and very active breed. However, poodles do like a lot of attention. If they don’t get this, they might develop a bad barking habit. Keep this in mind if you plan to get a mini Goldendoodle.

Training your Mini Goldendoodle 

 

 

It is important to start training your mini goldendoodle at a young age. This mini poodle mixed breed can start learning basic commands at 7-8 weeks old. Usually, formal training for these dogs starts around the time they are 6 months old. 

You can choose to hire a dog trainer. They will generally work with you at least once a week for 3 to 4 months. This can make a huge difference in your dog’s training. However, you can also train your mini goldendoodle on your own. If you want your dog to learn from you every day, this is a great route to take. You could even consult with a dog trainer over the phone or via video calls. 

Some of the options that work best for training Goldendoodles are clicker training, rewarding with toys or food, and using positive praise.

It is important to remember that the mini goldendoodle temperament is not the same for every mini Goldendoodle. Your dog might take less or more time to train than someone else’s Goldendoodle. Just keep at it until your mini Goldendoodle picks up what you are trying to teach them.

Facts About the Mini Goldendoodle

If you want to know how big do goldendoodles get, there is a breed club for the Golden Retriever Poodle mix. That breed club is the Goldendoodle Association of North America, and on its list are the different sizes of the Goldendoodle. There is even a petite range, which is smaller than mini, and that is below 14 inches in height and weighing in at less than 25 pounds. Whether they are petite or mini, they are still classified by their owners as mini Goldendoodles.

Adult Goldendoodles will vary in size and weight, and this is entirely dependent on the parents. As an adult, the mini Goldendoodle will be anywhere from 17 to 24 inches tall and can weigh between 40 to 90 pounds.

This difference in adult size is due to the Golden Retriever’s larger and strong frame. Since Toy and Miniature Poodles are much smaller and petite, mini’s aren’t necessarily “mini’s,” which again is totally dependent on its parents. The determining factor of the coat length is also dependent on the parents. And because Goldens have thick, long, and straight coats, and Poodles are thick and curly coats, their coats will differ from parents to parents. There could even be a difference in the length of coats for all the puppies from the same litter.

Do you want to know how long do goldendoodles live? The average life expectancy for goldendoodles is between 10-15 years. This life expectancy is inherited from the poodle and Golden Retriever parents. Poodles, even the mini poodle, often live to be between 12 and 15 years of age. Golden Retrievers generally live to be between 10 and 12 years of age.

So, What is the Temperament of the Mini Goldendoodle?

Once again, the mini Goldendoodle is a mixed breed. You are going to get a more predominant temperament depending on his or her parents. While Miniature Poodles are intelligent, they also have a habit of being standoffish or even snappy around strangers. This is why many mini poodles will bark nonstop when someone comes in the driveway.

That being said, there may not be a perfect mix. There may not be any way of knowing. That’s why it’s important to do your research before adopting your mini Goldendoodle and figure out your best options for socializing your new pup. Taking your new pup to dog parks, on trips with you, and taking them around people they don’t know often can help to to prevent or even break the barking habit.
