Why Dogs Eat Chocolate?

Dogs are attracted to the sweet taste of chocolate. However, chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is harmful to dogs.

Theobromine is a bitter alkaloid that is found in the cocoa bean. It is similar to caffeine, but it is more toxic to dogs.

- It can cause:**

- vomiting,

- diarrhea,

- panting,

- increased thirst,

- urination,

- racing heart rate,

- seizures,

- and even death.**

The amount of theobromine in chocolate varies depending on the type of chocolate.

- Dark chocolate contains the most theobromine, while milk chocolate and white chocolate contain less.

The toxic dose of theobromine for dogs is 100 to 200 mg per kilogram of body weight. This means that a 10-kilogram dog would need to eat 1000 to 2000 mg of theobromine to be poisoned.

A single ounce of dark chocolate contains approximately 100 mg of theobromine, so even a small amount of chocolate can be harmful to a dog.

If you think your dog has eaten chocolate, it is important to take them to the vet immediately. The vet will be able to determine if your dog has been poisoned and will provide treatment.
