Do Dogs Empty Their Anal Glands When Scared?

While dogs can empty their anal glands when they are scared, it is not the only reason for them to do so. Anal glands are small, sac-like structures located on either side of the anus. They produce a foul-smelling liquid that is used to mark territory or communicate. Dogs typically express, or empty, their anal glands by squeezing them with their anal sphincter muscles. Some dogs may do this when they are scared in an effort to deter predators. However, other reasons dogs express anal glands include:

- Feeling stressed or anxious

- Excitement or happiness

- Greeting another dog or human

- Having diarrhea or constipation

If you notice your dog expressing anal glands frequently, it is important to talk to your veterinarian. There may be an underlying medical condition causing the problem.
