Understanding and Managing Dog Skin Allergies: A Guide from a Guide Dog Trainer

Do you struggle with dog skin allergies? It can be frustrating, especially when your pup’s comfort is at stake.

Stetson, a Black Labrador Retriever bred for the Guide Dog program, has made the diagnosis clear: his skin issues are more than a simple itch. Unlike many of our previous dogs, who may have had mild, unnoticed allergies, Stetson’s symptoms require veterinary attention.

Stetson and Linus—our shelter rescue—are very different in many ways. While some observers say they look like brothers, a closer look reveals distinct breed characteristics. Stetson is a pure‑bred Lab, whereas Linus appears to be an Australian Shepherd mix with possible Chow, Lab, or Husky ancestry. He may be a candidate for a breed‑identification test.

Beyond genetics, their health journeys have diverged dramatically.

Our Healthy Aussie Mix Rescue Pup

When we first adopted Linus, he was exhausted, flea‑infested, anemic, and battling a stomach infection and worms. We cleaned him up, provided veterinary care, and he has since become a healthy, vibrant companion.

UPDATE: Linus passed away on May 7, 2018 at 13½ years old. He remains in our hearts.

Our Not‑So‑Healthy Lab

Stetson arrived from a sterile environment, perfectly healthy, and received routine vaccinations—just like Linus. The differences began after that. He has visited the vet at least four times for ear infections, four times for skin issues, and twice for a foot injury. Compared to Linus’s yearly check‑ups, this represents a significant health disparity.

During our most recent visit, Stetson’s recurring skin allergy prompted a new treatment plan. We switched his food to Natural Balance Duck & Potato Allergy Formula, hoping to reduce triggers. Unfortunately, by summer his skin was again red and irritated, necessitating another vet visit.

Below is the veterinarian’s assessment:

• No ear infections, which often accompany allergies—good news.
• Red, irritated skin and scabs indicate an allergic reaction with bacterial involvement.
• Mites were ruled out under a microscope, though they can still contribute to allergies.
• Food is unlikely the culprit, given the current allergy formula.
• Flea exposure remains the most probable cause. We had been limiting flea prevention to Frontline Plus only during warmer months.
• Ringworm was excluded after a black‑light examination.

The vet concluded that fleas are the primary trigger and recommended strict flea prevention. We received a flea‑and‑mite medication and a topical treatment called ProMeris, along with the antibiotic Cephalexin to address bacterial infection.

UPDATE: We now use Frontline Plus topically to keep fleas and ticks at bay.

With these measures, Stetson should clear his allergies within a few weeks. If not, a return to the vet is advised.

Our vet bill was nearly $200. Luckily, we recently won a $200 gift certificate from the Orange County Super Pet Adoption at the Irvine Animal Care Center. Still, the expense prompted us to consider pet insurance for both Stetson and Linus.
