How to Ease Your New Puppy’s Transition with a Familiar Litter Scent

Over a year ago, I welcomed Stetson from the Guide Dogs of America facility in Sylmar, CA. At just 7 weeks old and 12 pounds, he was already the biggest of the five pups—a yellow Labrador and four black labs.

I still recall the day: the puppy program manager, Louise, briefed us on best practices, handed out starter kits, and led us to the kennels for our first encounter with the litter.

Excited yet cautious, I asked seasoned puppy raisers for advice. One memory that stands out is from Tammy, our Orange County Guide Dog group leader who had already raised five Guide Dogs of America puppies.

“Bring a new toy and rub it on each puppy in the litter. The scent of the litter will settle on the toy. When you later place the toy in the crate, the familiar scent eases the puppy’s anxiety during the first night alone,” she advised.

Instead of a toy, a blanket works just as well—or you can combine both. Below is Stetson with his first ducky toy, scented with the scent of his litter.

Having access to the entire litter’s scent is a simple yet powerful trick that can improve sleep quality for both puppy and owner during those initial nights.
