DIY Lavender Calming Spray for Dogs: Easy Steps to Reduce Anxiety
Dogs can become anxious and stressed from a number of things, including loud noises such as thunderstorms, boredom, trauma, unfamiliar people or animals, change of routine, separation and physical restraint. You can help your dog manage his stress by making a spray with lavender oil, which is known for its calming effects.
Things You'll Need
1 ounce spray bottle
1 ounce of warm water
3 - 4 drops of lavender oil
Mixing Instructions
Add 1 ounce of warm water to the spray bottle. Then add 3 to 4 drops of lavender oil. Replace the cap on the spray bottle and shake the bottle vigorously.
If you are reusing an old spray bottle, clean and dry it completely before mixing the solution.
Application Instructions
For direct application to your dog, you can either spray the solution on your hands and then massage your dog's coat, or you can spray the mist directly onto your dog, and then massage it into his coat. If you are spraying directly onto his coat, spray from a distance of 6 inches. Apply the solution from the neck down to the tail only, never near your dog's face, eyes and nose. Shake the solution before each use.
Additional Uses
Spraying the solution lightly in the air and on your dog's bedding is another way to use the spray for calming. You can even spray your dog's favorite plush toy.
Warning
Never give lavender or any other essential oils internally.
Do not use any essential oils on pregnant dogs or dogs that are prone to seizures without first consulting your veterinarian.
Tip
Lavender is the most frequently recommended essential oil for calming but other calming oils may work. If lavender doesn't seem to help your dog, you can try chamomile, jasmine, frankincense, lemon or marjoram. Just substitute one of these oils for lavender in the mixture.
