Effective Solutions for Dogs Experiencing Excessive Stomach Noise
Dog with a tummy ache
Excessive stomach noise in a dog is called borborygmus. It is usually accompanied by flatulence, belching, abdominal distention and constant restlessness. Borborygmus is more common in larger breeds, such as German shepherds or Newfoundlands, but can occur in any individual dog. Once a veterinarian has ruled out parasites or an illness as the cause, the owner can try a number of cures.
Remove Corn Meal
First, it is critical to remove corn from your dog's diet. Corn is a major cause of intestinal gas. Do not use any commercial dog food that lists corn meal as a main ingredient. According to the Dog Food Project, corn meal has poor nutritional value and should be avoided.
Antacid
An over-the-counter antacid such as Pepto-Bismal can have the same effect on a canine intestinal system as a human. Small amounts often suffice to calm a dog's stomach.
High Fiber
High fiber is important. Boiled brown rice is effective. In fact, rice and chicken comprises a common diet for German shepherds, a breed that often suffers borborygmus. Milk bones are a safe treat.
Enzymes
Plain yogurt is an effective cure. The enzymes in the yogurt help the dog's digestive system work more efficiently. A veterinarian may prescribe porcine pancreatic enzymes for an animal with extreme digestive problems.
Plain Pumpkin
A few spoonfuls of plain pumpkin can calm a dog's stomach. The pumpkin can be home-cooked or from a can, as long as it is unspiced.
Massage
A gentle massage can be effective. Quietly coax the animal to lie on its back, and gently rub its belly.
