Homemade Dog Food Recipes to Support Dogs with Kidney Failure
A dog diagnosed with canine kidney failure should have a different diet from healthy dogs. Dogs with kidney failure require a diet low in phosphorus, sodium and, often, protein. Low phosphorus reduces mineral deposits in the dog's kidneys, and with low-protein diets, dogs suffer fewer problems from nitrogenous wastes.
Recipe One
An egg-and-potato diet is a high-potassium, low-phosphorus and low-protein meal for your dog suffering from kidney problems. Use one cooked egg, three cups of broiled potatoes, a teaspoon of chicken fat, 600 mg of calcium and half of a multivitamin.
Recipe Two
For a similar low-protein, high-potassium and low-phosporus meal, prepare a canine chicken-and-potato diet. Cook a quarter cup of chicken breast, three cups of potatoes, 600 mg of calcium, a teaspoon of chicken fat and half a vitamin.
