Avoid Coyote Encounters: Safe Tips for Pet Owners

In January two people were bitten by coyotes in the Chicagoland area. While coyotes are unlikely to attack humans there are attacks on our pets, especially during the winter months. It is important to take precautions.

HOW TO AVOID ENCOUNTERS

– Do not leave food outdoors for your pet. This could be viewed as an invitation for coyotes.

– Walk dogs on a short leash and monitor your surroundings.

– Always supervise your pet when you let them outside. Coyotes can easily climb a fence and snatch up your pet.

– Switch up your daily routine. Coyotes are smart and can learn your routine very easily. Try changing the times you and your pet go out for walks or take them outside at different times during the day.

– If you see a coyote, make loud noises, jump around, and create a lot of commotion. For the safety of residents and their pets, its best that coyotes stay wary of humans.
