What is Happy Tail Syndrome?

Happy tail syndrome, also called broken wag syndrome, is a condition that causes trauma to the tip of the dog's tail. It usually occurs in dogs that are kept indoors and are released or taken outside to run and play.

In most cases, happy tail syndrome is  caused by the tail accidentally being caught in or hitting something while the dog is wagging it. If this force is sufficiently strong, it can cause bleeding, bruising, and tissue damage at the tip or end of the tail.

Dogs that are particularly happy and wag their tails enthusiastically or vigorously are more prone to developing the syndrome. Additionally, long-tailed breeds or dogs with strong, thick tails are more likely to sustain the injury.

There are several signs and symptoms of happy tail, however, signs might not always be obvious to owners because many dogs may not readily admit pain or discomfort.

- One of the first things you may notice is a cut, laceration, or bruise on the tip of your dog's tail.

- The tail may be swollen and there could be bleeding or scabbing present.

- Your dog may hold its tail in an 'L' shape if it is trying to avoid painful contact with the ground or any nearby objects.

- Your dog might also constantly be licking, biting or chewing the end of its tail.

- Changes in your dog’s behavior, such as aggression, lethargy, reluctance to move or be touched can indicate that your pet is in pain or discomfort.
