How to Shave a Dog With Matted Hair

Supplies:

- Slicker brush

- Wide-toothed comb

- Detangling spray or conditioner

- Electric dog clippers (optional)

- Grooming scissors

- Towel

- Treats

- Patience!

Instructions:

1. Prepare your dog. Place your dog on a non-slip surface, such as a grooming table or a rubber mat. Make sure your dog is comfortable and restrained so that it cannot move around too much.

2. Brush your dog's hair. Start by brushing your dog's hair with a slicker brush to remove any loose hair and tangles. Be gentle and avoid pulling too hard on your dog's hair.

3. Apply detangling spray or conditioner. If your dog's hair is particularly matted, you may need to apply a detangling spray or conditioner. Let the product sit for a few minutes before continuing.

4. Start shaving your dog's hair. If your dog's hair is very long or matted, you may want to start by using electric dog clippers to remove bulk of the hair. Use a long clipper guard and start at the top of your dog's head and work your way down.

5. Use grooming scissors to trim your dog's hair. Once you have removed the majority of the hair with the clippers, use grooming scissors to trim any remaining matted hair. Be sure to trim the hair in the direction of growth and avoid cutting too close to your dog's skin.

6. Rinse your dog's fur. Once you have finished trimming your dog's hair, rinse it thoroughly with warm water. Be sure to rinse all soap out of your dog's fur.

7. Dry your dog's fur. You can use a towel to dry your dog's fur, or allow it to air dry.

8. Give your dog a treat. When you are finished, be sure to give your dog a treat as a reward for its good behavior.
