Are Onions Bad For Dogs?

Onions belong to the Allium family, which includes shallots, leeks, chives, and garlic. Although onions are not considered to be toxic to dogs, they can be harmful if consumed in large quantities. Onions contain compounds called thiosulphates, which can damage red blood cells in dogs, leading to a condition called hemolytic anemia. This can cause symptoms such as weakness, lethargy, pale gums, and rapid heart rate. In severe cases, hemolytic anemia can be life-threatening.

The amount of onion that is toxic to dogs varies depending on the size of the dog and the amount consumed. As a general rule, a small dog should not consume more than 1/4 of a medium-sized onion, while a large dog should not consume more than 1/2 of a medium-sized onion. However, it is best to err on the side of caution and avoid giving your dog any onions at all.

If you think your dog has consumed onions, contact your veterinarian immediately. Treatment for hemolytic anemia may include blood transfusions, intravenous fluids, and medications to support red blood cell production.
