Safe Human Medications for Dogs: A Vet‑Approved Guide
What Human Medications Are Safe for Dogs?
Many human medications can be used safely on dogs. It is important to check with your veterinarian for dosages and safety before administering any medication. This is particularly important in very small dogs because it is easy for them to overdose. These human medications are commonly found in people's homes and are safe for dogs.
Asprin
Aspirin Tablets
Buffered aspirin is safe to administer to your dog for pain and inflammation associated with arthritis or injury. Plain aspirin can be used if given with food to prevent upset stomach. The usual dosage is 81.25 grams of buffered aspirin for every 10 pounds of dog.
Prescription Drugs
Prednisone and rimadyl are two prescription drugs regularly prescribed for humans and dogs. Prednisone is a steroid used to control inflammation. Rimadyl is an arthritis medication. Although safe for dogs, they are available by prescription only from a veterinarian.
Kaopectate
Kaopectate is safe to administer to dogs to help control vomiting and diarrhea. The usual dosage is 1 tsp. per 10 pounds of dog. If the vomiting or diarrhea continues for more than 24 hours, call a veterinarian.
Antacids
Tagamet and Pepcid AC are safe for dogs. They are very effective at controlling vomiting and acid irritation caused by ulcers. Both of these products work by controlling the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Check with a veterinarian for dosage.
Antihistamines
Benadryl is a brand name medicine that is safe for dogs. Any generic diphenhydramine is safe to administer. Antihistamines are used to help reduce itching and inflammation associated with insect bites, allergies and contact dermatitis.
