How to Care for a Dog in Heat

Before the Heat Cycle:

- Ensure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and has been spayed or neutered if you don't plan on breeding her.

Recognizing the Heat Cycle:

- The heat cycle typically lasts 2-3 weeks and occurs every 6-12 months.

- Signs include swollen, red vulva, bloody vaginal discharge, increased urination and marking, and increased interest from male dogs.

Caring During the Heat Cycle:

- Keep your dog indoors as much as possible to prevent unwanted breeding and possible aggression from male dogs.

- Use doggie diapers or sanitary napkins to manage the discharge and prevent staining.

- Take your dog out frequently to urinate and defecate, and clean up any discharge promptly.

- Avoid swimming, bathing, or water activities to prevent infection.

Behavioral Changes:

- Your dog may become restless, withdrawn, or unusually affectionate during the heat cycle.

- Provide comfort and attention, but be prepared for mood swings and changes in behavior.

Hygiene and Grooming:

- Keep your dog clean and dry, especially the vulva area, to prevent infections.

- Gently wipe the vulva with a warm, damp cloth to remove discharge and dirt.

Feeding and Exercise:

- Maintain your dog's regular diet and exercise routine, but be mindful of her energy levels and adjust as needed.

- Provide fresh, clean water at all times.

Preventing Unwanted Breeding:

- If you don't plan on breeding your dog, keep her away from male dogs and consider spaying her after the heat cycle is complete.

Consult Your Veterinarian:

- If you have concerns about your dog's heat cycle, discharge, or behavior, consult your veterinarian for guidance and advice.
