How to Care for a Dog in Heat

Before Your Dog Goes into Heat:

- Familiarize yourself with the signs that your dog is in heat. These include swelling of the vulva, a bloody discharge, and increased urination and restlessness.

- Make sure your dog is microchipped and has an up-to-date ID tag in case she gets lost while in heat.

- Consider keeping your dog indoors during her heat cycle to prevent her from escaping or mating with another dog.

Caring for Your Dog in Heat:

- Keep your dog's vulva clean by gently wiping it with warm water and a soft cloth.

- Provide your dog with a comfortable bed in a quiet area of the house.

- Make sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water.

- Feed your dog a high-quality diet and avoid giving her any new foods that could upset her stomach.

- Avoid taking your dog for walks or letting her off leash in public areas.

- Be patient and understanding with your dog. She may be more affectionate or needy than usual, and she may experience some mood swings.

After Your Dog's Heat Cycle:

- Your dog's heat cycle will typically last for about 2-3 weeks. Once it's over, her vulva will return to its normal size and the discharge will stop.

- You should take your dog to the vet for a checkup about a week after her heat cycle ends to make sure she's healthy.

- If you're not planning to breed your dog, you should consider having her spayed to prevent future heat cycles.
