Tips to Ensure a Happy, Safe Summer for You and Your Pet!

Hot Asphalt

When pavement is scorching, keep your dog off hot asphalt. The ground can heat up quickly, burning sensitive paw pads. Limit walks during peak heat. If you can’t hold your hand flat on the surface for 5 seconds, it’s too hot.

Picnics & Outdoor Activities

Adopt a “no human food for pets” rule and keep pets away from grills. Provide plenty of fresh water, shade, and avoid excessive exercise. Watch for overheating signs: excessive panting, rapid breathing, drooling, weakness, stupor, collapse, seizures, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, or a temperature above 104 °F. Brachycephalic breeds (e.g., Pugs, Persian cats), seniors, overweight animals, and those with heart or lung disease are especially vulnerable and should stay in air‑conditioned rooms when possible.

Barbecue leftovers can be toxic. Keep alcohol, grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate, and anything containing xylitol out of reach.

Swimming & Boating

Never leave pets unattended near a pool. Not all dogs are strong swimmers. Introduce water gradually and stay within arm’s reach. Rinse your dog after swimming to remove chlorine or salt, and discourage drinking pool water. If you go boating, equip your dog with a properly fitted life jacket.

Fireworks

Leave pets at home during Fourth of July celebrations and avoid using fireworks around them. Explosions can cause burns, trauma, or release hazardous chemicals. Loud noises also trigger fear, leading to escape or injury. Provide a quiet, safe, escape‑proof space for your pet.

Yard and Landscaping Safety

Rodenticides, insecticides, citronella candles, tiki torches, and insect coils can be poisonous if ingested. Keep these products out of reach. If you suspect poisoning, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426‑4435.
