DIY Macramé Dog Leash: Build a Custom, Durable, and Stylish Leash

Design your very own dog leash for a fraction of the store-bought price and learn some handy knot-tying techniques in the process. Woven with paracord, this macramé leash is super strong and — dare, we say — also super cute.

Things You'll Need:

• Snap hook
  
• Masking tape
  
• 550 paracord, 2 colors, 64 feet each
• Scissors
• Glue

Step 1

Tape the snap hook to your work surface.

Step 2

Fold one of the paracord strings in half and thread the hoop through the snap hook.

Step 3

Thread the ends of the paracord through the loop and pull tightly to form a tight knot.

Step 4

Repeat with the second paracord string. For reference, these knots are called lark's head knots.

Step 5

Cross the right-side string on top of the two middle strings.

Step 6

Cross the left-side string on top of the right-side string.

Step 7

Cross the left-side string under the two middle strings and through the right-side loop.

Step 8

Pull the right and left-side strings to tighten the knot. This knot is known as a square knot.

Step 9

This time, you'll do the reverse of the knot you just made by crossing the right-side string under the two middle strings, the left-side string under the right-side string, the left-side string on top of the middle strings and through the loop.

Step 10

Keep alternating over/under square knots until you have 1 foot of loose string remaining at the end.

Step 11

Roll the leash to form a handle.

Step 12

Using the remaining loose string, tie square knots around the leash to join the handle to the leash. You'll want to tie at least 5-6 square knots for a secure connection.

Step 13

Tie the loose ends in basic knots and cut off any excess string.

Step 14

Dab glue on the cut ends to prevent them from fraying.
